NEWS Asan Medical Center acknowledged as one of the World’s Best Specialized Hospitals by Newsweek 2021.10.25

▲AMC has been ranked as one of the world-leading hospitals in 8 clinical categories of the World’s Best Specialized Hospitals 2022 by Newsweek.

Asan Medical Center (AMC) gets ahead of the world’s best hospitals at the World’s Best Specialized Hospitals 2022 by Newsweek, the US-based news magazine. AMC’s detailed rankings are as follows: 5th in oncology; 5th in endocrinology; 8th in gastroenterology; 8th in neurology; 12th in orthopedics; 27th in pulmonology; 35th in cardiology; 52nd in cardiac surgery; and rank 70th in pediatrics.

Among the eight categories in which AMC was ranked high globally, it achieved first among local hospitals in seven departments: oncology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, neurology, pulmonology, cardiology, and cardiac surgery. Earlier this year, AMC was ranked 34th among international hospitals at the World’s Best Hospitals 2021, announced by Newsweek. It defended first place among the local hospitals three years in a row. AMC was also highly recognized in the recently released rankings of the World’s Best Specialized Hospitals, building upon its reputation as the best hospital in Korea.

In particular, AMC climbed up the rank in oncology and cardiology. Having moved up two notches from last year, the AMC Cancer Institute was selected as one of the top five cancer treatment centers, MD Anderson Cancer Center, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and Mayo Clinic-Rochester in the United States.

The AMC Cancer Institute performs an average of approximately 20,000 oncology surgeries annually, the largest scale in the country, and treats more than 900,000 cancer patients a year. AMC was also the first to adopt the multidisciplinary cancer care system through which more than 4,000 cases are treated every year. It is observed that AMC’s continued efforts to provide optimal guidance to cancer patients and raise cancer treatment standards were acknowledged both inside and outside the country and reflected in Newsweek’s evaluation results.

AMC moved up a notch in cardiology‑‑from last year’s 36th to this year’s 35th place in the global ranking‑‑and was the only Korean hospital to enter the top ranks in the global competition.

Newsweek has partnered with Statista Inc., a global market research and consumer data firm, to evaluate hospitals worldwide in 10 categories by collecting recommendations from some 40,000 medical experts from 20 countries. This survey began in June this year and lasted for two months. The final results were announced on Newsweek’s official website. The hospital ranking was determined based on recommendation points (70%) and ranking points (30%). The recommendation points reflected online surveys collected from approximately 40,000 healthcare providers such as doctors, medical professionals, and hospital officials in 20 countries, including the U.S. and European countries. The ranking points are based on hospital evaluation data from a publicly trusted medical professional group.

Based on this survey, it was found that the top five hospitals in endocrinology were Mayo Clinic-Rochester, Massachusetts General Hospital of Harvard Medical School, Cleveland Clinic, the Johns Hopkins Hospital, and AMC (which ranked 5th). Mayo Clinic-Rochester was ranked the first in gastroenterology, followed by Massachusetts General Hospital of Harvard Medical School, the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, Cleveland Clinic, and Policlinico Universitario A. Gemelli (Italy). The top five hospitals in cardiology were Massachusetts General Hospital of Harvard Medical School, Cleveland Clinic, Mayo Clinic-Rochester, the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, and Brigham and Women’s Hospital (see the table).
