Asan Foundation (Chairman Mong-Joon Chung) held the 15th Asan Award in Medicine Ceremony on March 21st, 2022. The Award was founded in 2008 to recognize and celebrate the outstanding achievements of national and international medical scientists in the fields of basic and clinical medicine. The Asan Award in Medicine Ceremony had been attended by more than 300 people including the laureates, their family members, and fellow medical scientists, but unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 outbreak, only the winners and their spouse were invited this year.

 

The laureates of the Award in Basic Medicine and the Award in Clinical Medicine were each prized with KRW 300 million. In addition, the laureates of the Award for Young Medical Scientists were awarded KRW 50 million each.

 

Professor Eui-Cheol Shin at KAIST Graduate School of Medicine has been honored with the Award in Basic Medicine. He has been acknowledged in his study on characterization of human immune responses against hepatitis viruses over the past 20 years.

 

Professor Jeong Min Lee at the Department of Radiology of Seoul National University College of Medicine won the Award in Clinical Medicine for his achievement in image-based diagnosis and prognosis prediction of hepatocellular carcinoma and validation of therapeutic effect of "No-Touch" radiofrequency ablation for small hepatocellular carcinoma.

 

The Award for Young Medical Scientists is presented to medical scientists who are under 40 years old. The winners were Professor Sung-Yon Kim at the Department of Chemistry Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics of Seoul National University (Award for Young Medical Scientists) for his study in elucidation of neural circuit mechanisms underlying behavioral and physiological responses to survival needs and Professor Chong Hyun Suh at the Department of Radiology of Asan Medical Center for the establishment of imaging strategies for brain metastasis from lung cancer and CNS lymphoma and Development of a deep learning-based Alzheimer's disease classification algorithm.
