The Robotic Surgery Center at Asan Medical Center (AMC), which has been leading the field of robotic surgery for severe diseases in Korea applying advanced robotic surgery to more than 4,000 cases of cancer, organ transplantation, and gynecological conditions annually, has achieved international acclaim.
The Robotic Surgery Center at AMC was recently designated as an 'Epicenter,' an international training center for robotic surgery, by Intuitive, a manufacturer of robotic surgery devices
The Epicenter designation is granted to hospitals that meet qualifications such as proficiency in operating robotic surgery devices and a substantial number of cumulative surgeries. These designated centers are responsible for conducting surgery observations and training for medical professionals worldwide.
Asan Medical Center, known for its accomplishments in robotic surgery for colorectal cancer and gynecological conditions, has earned Epicenter status for its Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Division of Colorectal Surgery. The robotic surgery training will be led by Professor Jeong-Yeol Park and Professor Sa-Ra Lee in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Professor Yong Sik Yoon in the Division of Colorectal Surgery.
Notably, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology performed over 900 robotic surgeries last year, including procedures for uterine and ovarian cancer, as well as pelvic organ prolapse. The Division of Colorectal Surgery conducted over 400 robotic surgeries, particularly for colorectal cancer.
Professor Yong Sik Yoon, the Director of the Robotic Surgery Center, stated, "Asan Medical Center established Asia’s fourth Robotic Surgery Training Center in 2013, providing global medical professionals with robotic surgery training. With the recent Epicenter designation, we plan to implement a higher-level training program than before."
