Srijan (male, 4 years old), who was born with a congenital heart defect known as ‘transposition of great arteries (TGA),’ regained his health after undergoing surgery again at Asan Medical Center following the first surgery in 2020.

Srijan met AMC Medical Volunteers in Nepal in January 2020. He was urgently transferred to Asan Medical Center 15 days later due to the difficulties in performing surgery locally. At that time, Professor Tae-Jin Yun of the Division of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery performed an arterial switch operation and surgery to restore the hole between ventricles, restoring the child’s health. However, he developed ventricular dysfunction due to the difficulty of continuous treatment and management.

Asan Medical Center invited Srijan again on March 4 and performed surgery to upgrade his pacemaker to CRT (cardiac resynchronization therapy) and heart failure treatment. Srijan’s ventricular function recovered, and he returned home on March 27 in a healthy state.

Professor Jae Suk Baek of the Division of Pediatric Cardiology said, “I am thankful that the child has followed the treatment process safely and hope that he continues to live a healthy and happy life back in Nepal.”

The treatment for Srijan was fully funded by the Asan Foundation and Asan Medical Center.
