Dr. Sokcheng Orn, a fellow from Cambodia, serves as an ophthalmologist at the National Pediatric Hospital Cambodia, a government-run institution. After completing a two-month training program at Jeju National University Hospital last June, Dr. Sokcheng Orn began her training at the Department of Ophthalmology at Asan Medical Center under the guidance of Professor Ho-Seok Sa in March of this year. Dr. Sokcheng Orn shares her experiences during her international physician training at Asan Medical Center.

Why did you choose Asan Medical Center for training?

When I was training at Jeju National University Hospital, I often heard about Asan Medical Center from the professors there. They spoke highly of its status as not only the largest hospital in Korea but also as a facility equipped with world-class medical technology and systems. I was advised that training here would greatly enhance my skills. The Ophthalmology Department at the National Pediatric Hospital Cambodia, where I currently work, was established just a year ago, so we have not yet seen a high volume of patients. At Asan Medical Center, I knew I would have the opportunity to see a large number of patients and encounter a wide variety of surgical cases, making it an ideal environment for education.

What are your thoughts about the training so far?

I have learned a great deal by directly observing and experiencing a range of surgical techniques and advanced medical equipment that I could not have encountered while working in Cambodia. Professor Ho-Seok Sa, along with other highly skilled and experienced professors, have been passionate in their teaching, which has further fueled my desire to learn. I also participated in the Congress of the Korean Society of Ophthalmic Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, where I was able to gain insights into the latest developments in oculoplastic surgery. The event also allowed me to continue building connections with medical professionals from other countries. Although living alone in a foreign country can sometimes feel lonely, I find strength in spending time with colleagues who share the common ground of being ophthalmologists and international physicians.

What impressed you the most while training at AMC?

I was amazed at how specialized the medical fields are, even within the same department. Each medical professional possesses deep expertise in their specific area, enabling patients to receive more appropriate treatments and recover more quickly. I am currently learning about various areas such as oculoplastic surgery, eyelid diseases, orbital fractures, and orbital tumors. I hope to use the knowledge and experience gained here to provide higher-quality care to patients in Cambodia. The culture of collaboration that permeates the hospital also left a strong impression on me. I observed how multiple medical professionals work together, combining their expertise to provide the best possible care for patients.

How is your life in Korea?

On my days off, I usually spend time with my roommate. I particularly enjoy exploring different parts of Seoul. The city is a fantastic blend of nature and modernity. While high-rise buildings and contemporary architecture dominate the skyline, the city is also filled with lakes, parks, and trees, creating a green urban environment. There are so many activities to enjoy in Seoul, from jogging and cycling to sightseeing, shopping, and hiking. My life here has been very satisfying. Thanks to the help of many staff members at Asan Medical Center, I have been able to adapt without much difficulty. I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude.
