Asan Medical Center of ASAN Foundation (Chairman Chung Mong-Joon) has secured top rankings in multiple clinical specialties according to the ‘World’s Best Specialized Hospitals 2025’ rankings conducted by Newsweek, a U.S. weekly magazine. Asan Medical Center ranked 3rd globally in endocrinology, 4th in gastroenterology, and 5th in both cancer and urology.
Asan Medical Center is the only hospital in South Korea to have four specialties ranked in the global top five, and it is among a select few worldwide to achieve such high recognition.
Notably, endocrinology has ranked 3rd globally for three consecutive years, standing alongside world-renowned institutions such as the Mayo Clinic and Massachusetts General Hospital, affiliated with Harvard Medical School. In oncology, Asan Medical Center has moved up a notch from last year, entering the top five global cancer institutes.
Domestically, Asan Medical Center ranked first in five specialties: endocrinology, gastroenterology, neurology, cardiology, and cardiac surgery, more than any other hospital in South Korea. It has held the top national ranking in cardiology and cardiac surgery for five consecutive years, solidifying its reputation as South Korea's leading heart institute.
Newsweek, in collaboration with the global research firm Statista, conducted the evaluation under the title ‘World’s Best Specialized Hospitals 2025.’ The results were announced on Newsweek's website on the 17th (local time).
The evaluation was based on three key criteria: △ an online survey of 40,000 medical professionals from over 30 countries (90%), △ international accreditation of medical institutions (6.5%), and △ implementation of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) (3.5%).
In addition to its top-five rankings, Asan Medical Center also received high marks in several other specialties: 8th in neurology, 12th in orthopedics, 24th in cardiology, 25th in pulmonology, and 42nd in cardiac surgery.
Many specialties of Asan Medical Center saw an improvement in ranking this year. Cardiac surgery rose by 10 places, cardiology by 9, and pulmonology by 7. Gastroenterology and oncology each improved by one place.
Earlier this year, Newsweek ranked Asan Medical Center 22nd globally and 1st in South Korea in the ‘World’s Best Hospitals 2024’ ranking.
Asan Medical Center has established its own standard guidelines, known as the Asan Global Standard (AGS), to ensure the highest level of care for critically ill patients across all services, from consultation to surgery and hospitalization. As a result, the hospital attracts patients not only from across South Korea but also from around the world. Last year, approximately 19,000 international patients from 120 countries sought treatment at Asan Medical Center.
In addition to international patients, the hospital continues to attract medical professionals from overseas who seek to learn its expertise in treating complex diseases such as cancer, organ transplantation, and heart conditions. In 2023 alone, 466 international medical professionals from 51 countries trained at Asan Medical Center. Over the past decade, more than 3,700 professionals from 90 countries have completed training. Many of these trainees, upon returning to their home countries, recommend Asan Medical Center as the ultimate destination for critically ill patients, further enhancing its global reputation.
