Dr. Sandipan Hazra serves as a specialist in rehabilitation medicine at NRS Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal, India. He has a deep interest in pain management and neurorehabilitation, particularly in chronic pain management and autonomic nervous system disorders. Dr. Sandipan Hazra shares his experiences during his international physician training at Asan Medical Center.
What brought you to Asan Medical Center for training?
Asan Medical Center is globally recognized for its excellence in clinical care, education, and research. Its innovative approaches to patient care, enabled by cutting-edge medical technologies and advanced equipment, make it a world leader. I applied to train here to experience and learn from these advancements firsthand. During my time in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, I gained profound insights into cancer rehabilitation, swallowing disorder rehabilitation, neurorehabilitation, and cardiopulmonary rehabilitation. The experience has offered perspectives that I had not previously considered.

What aspects of the training have left the greatest impression on you?
The teamwork among medical staff left a lasting impression. Specialists from various fields collaborate seamlessly, sharing ideas to provide optimal, personalized care for patients. Witnessing this multidisciplinary and patient-centered approach throughout my training reaffirmed the critical importance of collaboration in improving healthcare quality. I was also impressed by the systematic documentation and standardization of rehabilitation protocols. Every treatment method and process is carefully documented, ensuring precise and consistent care. Observing the medical team’s dedication to standardized care has given me ideas about the future direction of rehabilitation medicine.

What Are Your Plans After Completing Your Training?
I plan to apply the knowledge and skills I gained here to enhance the quality of care at my hospital. By integrating the latest technologies and protocols, I aim to improve pain management, cancer rehabilitation, and swallowing disorder rehabilitation services. Additionally, I intend to continue engaging in research and fostering international collaborations. Ultimately, my goal is to contribute to advancements in neurorehabilitation and cardiopulmonary rehabilitation while remaining active at the forefront of medical innovation.

I would like to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who made this training possible. Learning at Asan Medical Center—a globally recognized institution in clinical care, research, and education—has been an invaluable and inspiring experience. I am especially grateful to Professor Eun Jae Ko, who guided me throughout my training, as well as Professors Jae Yong Jeon, Dae Yul Kim, Won Kim, and Seungwoo Cha. Their support allowed me to observe and learn about world-class rehabilitation medicine. I would also like to thank the staff for their warm encouragement and assistance, which made my training both enriching and productive. The memories and knowledge gained here will serve as the foundation for my continued efforts to advance the field of rehabilitation medicine.
