PEOPLE [Welcome to AMC] “Learning World-Class Supermicrosurgery at Asan Medical Center.” 2025.03.07

"Learning World-Class Supermicrosurgery at Asan Medical Center."

Dr. Jimmy Sung-Chuan Chao from National Taiwan University Hospital

I have been training in supermicrosurgery at the Department of Plastic Surgery at Asan Medical Center since last year, focusing on blood vessels and lymphatic vessels less than 0.8mm thick. Through observation, I have been learning about various advanced microsurgeries, such as lymphaticovenous anastomosis for lymphedema or lower extremity reconstruction. When I return to Taiwan after training, I will undertake an animal model research project for lymphatic reconstruction in dementia and neuroma!

Asan Medical Center seems open to different ideas.

One day, a patient with lymphedema requiring surgery was admitted. All the relevant medical professionals gathered to discuss treatment options because the patient’s condition was grave. I noticed everyone was listening to each other’s opinions and trying to find the best possible treatment approach through constructive criticism and healthy discussions based on scientific grounds. All respected each argument in a collaborative search for a solution, and this was different from the Korean culture I knew. I realized that Asan Medical Center has its own unique culture of excellence that goes beyond the hierarchical culture in East Asian countries like Taiwan and Korea.

I was particularly impressed by how colleagues frequently express gratitude and respect for one another.

I often hear colleagues say, “Thank you” or “I appreciate your efforts” at Asan Medical Center. Hearing this often, this became the first Korean expression I learned. Of course, we also express gratitude and respect among colleagues in Taiwan, but I could feel the staff at Asan Medical Center also work with respect for each other. It seemed they were just used to it. Although my Korean is not fluent, I have tried to use these expressions often during my training. Thank you, Asan Medical Center!

Hanyang Doseong (Seoul City Wall) Trail, connecting the history of Seoul, was a special experience.

Whenever I had time, I visited many places in Seoul, both tourist attractions and locations that would be hard to see unless you have lived in Seoul for a long time. One of the most memorable experiences was walking along the Hanyang Doseong Trail, which follows the ancient city walls of Seoul. I could feel the history and nature of Seoul. I also rode a bicycle along the Hangang River for about 70 km and visited Nami Island and Suwon Hwaseong Fortress. Oh! I enjoyed watching the cooking show ‘Culinary Class Wars’, and experiencing various Korean foods while traveling around is another happy memory.
I will start animal research for lymphatic reconstruction in dementia and neuroma.

I believe that supermicrosurgery is not a common path many people take.

Asan Medical Center has achieved world-class status in supermicrosurgery. When I return to Taiwan, I hope to follow the path to develop and explore the field of supermicrosurgery through new research and challenges.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my academic advisor, Professor Joon Pio Hong of the Department of Plastic Surgery, for inspiring me medically and even guiding me in my life (laughs). I am also grateful to the nurses I worked with, fellow international physicians, and Asan Medical International.
