“I Want to Share Korea’s Advanced Fetal Treatment Expertise with Malaysia”

Siti Sarah Ahmad, Fellow from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Asan Medical Center

I have been working as an obstetrician and gynecologist for 15 years, specializing in high-risk pregnancies and fetal treatment. Each time I meet a patient who required highly complex treatment, I felt a stronger desire to learn more and provide the best possible care for both the mother and baby. Since mid-June, I have been training at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of Asan Medical Center and the AMC Fetal Treatment Center. My goal is to share the advanced fetal treatment techniques I have learned in Korea with my colleagues back home in Malaysia.

Learning from Asia’s Leading Fetal Treatment Center

I explored many hospitals abroad where I could further develop my expertise in fetal treatment, and I chose the AMC Fetal Treatment Center, which has an outstanding reputation across Asia. I decided to apply after learning that its fetoscopic treatment program is recognized as one of the most advanced in the region.

When I first arrived at Asan Medical Center, the very first words that came out of my mouth were, “Wow, it’s huge!” (laughs). Beyond its impressive scale, I was struck by how thoroughly organized the hospital is — from its systematic clinical processes and state-of-the-art medical equipment to the exceptional professionalism of its staff.

Most of all, I was deeply impressed by how physicians, nurses, and every member of the healthcare team work together seamlessly with one shared purpose: providing the very best care for each patient.

Gaining Hands-On Experience in Advanced Fetal Procedures

At the AMC Fetal Treatment Center, I have been able to observe and participate in complex procedures rarely performed in Malaysia such as fetoscopic selective laser photocoagulation for twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS), selective fetal reduction, radiofrequency ablation, and intrauterine transfusion.

Together with the medical team at the AMC Fetal Treatment Center, I have also participated in intrauterine transfusions for fetuses with conditions such as anemia-related hydrops and thoracoamniotic shunt placements for complex fetal anomalies.

I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to learn up close from the team’s precise judgment and delicate treatment skills.

My Third Stay in Korea

Thinking about it now, I realize I have a special connection with Korea. This is already my third visit, following trips in 2015 and 2023. When I walk through the quiet palaces nestled amid Seoul’s vibrant and bustling cityscape, I’m reminded of how beautifully the city blends its past and present.

Bibimbap and sundubu-jjigae (soft tofu stew), which I first tried when I came to Korea, are still my favorite dishes. They’re delicious and also perfect to enjoy with my Muslim friends. Two years ago, I visited Naejangsan Mountain, where the autumn foliage was breathtakingly beautiful, and I’m planning to go again this fall!

Contributing to the Development of Fetal Treatment in Malaysia

Malaysia has established a basic infrastructure for prenatal care, fetal anomaly screening, and genetic testing to detect complications at an early stage. However, there is still a shortage of specialists in fetal treatment, and experience with complex cases such as fetal surgery and cardiac malformations remains limited.

When I return home, I hope to help build an environment where high-risk mothers and their babies can receive safe and advanced care. Lastly, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to my mentor, Professor Mi-Young Lee from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Asan Medical Center, as well as to the fellows, nurses, and coordinators who have given me tremendous support throughout my training.
