PEOPLE [Welcome to AMC] Jia Guo, Clinical Fellow from China 2025.12.01

“I hope to carry Asan Medical Center’s excellence back to China.”

Jia Guo, Clinical Fellow from the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Asan Medical Center

I earned my master’s degree in sports medicine at Qingdao University in China and gained clinical experience in the departments of orthopedics and sports medicine at The Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University.

I am now pursuing a PhD in medicine at the University of Ulsan College of Medicine under the guidance of Professor In-Ho Jeon from the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Asan Medical Center.

During my fellowship, I have been developing advanced surgical skills including arthroscopic elbow contracture release, total elbow arthroplasty, and reverse total shoulder arthroplasty and building valuable experience in the complex field of joint reconstruction.

A Shared Passion for Excellence

During my master’s studies in China, my advisor recommended Asan Medical Center, describing it as a hospital known for exceptional clinical outcomes and continuous innovation in orthopedic care.
Seeing it as a meaningful opportunity to deepen my expertise, I chose Korea without hesitation.

What impressed me most throughout my training was that everyone such as professors, senior and junior residents, nurses, and staff members involved in patient care shared the same passion for excellence.
I am grateful to feel myself growing a little more every day.

Support from Fellow International Scholars

It has already been two and a half years since I came to Korea in July 2023.
Living abroad can be challenging, but the support and encouragement from fellow international scholars give me great strength even in a busy routine.
My favorite Korean expression is “Fighting!” and I say it whenever I meet my colleagues.
It feels like that single word captures the unique energy and spirit you can only experience in Korea.
Now that I think about it, I’m not even sure if I can still call it a “Korean expression” (laughs).

Life in Korea Outside the Lab Is Truly Enjoyable

On weekends, I usually spend time outside the Asan Medical Center.
Taking time to recharge helps me begin each new week with more energy.
Sometimes I go for light trekking, and other times I visit beautifully designed cafés with friends I’ve met here.
I’ve explored many scenic spots in Seoul including Gyeongbokgung Palace, Bukchon Hanok Village, and Cheonggyecheon, and recently visited Petite France in Gapyeong as well.
Wherever I go, I experience the kindness and warm hospitality of the Korean people, which makes everything even more enjoyable.

My Time in Korea Is a Tremendous Asset as a Surgeon

Shoulder and elbow surgeries are highly complex procedures that require thorough evaluation of bones, ligaments, and soft tissues. Precise surgical planning, refined operative technique, and strong teamwork among the medical staff are essential. The structured clinical and research system I am experiencing at Asan Medical Center is an invaluable asset to me as an orthopedic surgeon.

Once I complete my PhD and return to China, I hope to share the knowledge and experience I gained here with my colleagues. I am deeply grateful to Professor In-Ho Jeon, my lab colleagues, and everyone I work with in the clinic and operating room of Asan Medical Center.
I look forward to learning even more during the remainder of my fellowship. Fighting!
