As the value of medical MyData, which positions patients as the owners of their own medical information, continues to gain prominence, Asan Medical Center has launched a full scale service that enables patients to access their medical records at any time and share them directly wherever needed.

On December 11, Asan Medical Center announced the launch of the Health Information Expressway initiative by opening a promotional information booth on the first floor of the East Building.

Led by the Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW) and the Korea Health Information Service, the Health Information Expressway initiative allows patients to access their medical records held across multiple medical institutions. Based on patient consent, selected data can be securely and efficiently transmitted directly to designated destinations.

Since its launch in September 2023, the initiative has grown to include 1,269 medical institutions nationwide, including 47 tertiary referral hospitals, all participating as providers of medical data.

Ahead of the full scale implementation, Asan Medical Center has served as a central repository and leading institution since July 2024, dedicating significant efforts to building a secure cloud infrastructure in compliance with the international data transmission standard FHIR to ensure the safe delivery of medical information to users.

Patients visiting Asan Medical Center can download the My Health Records mobile application developed by the Korea Health Information Service from major app stores to view, store, and share their test results and medical records. Accessible information includes patient details, medical institution information, diagnostic records such as visits and diagnoses, medication prescription histories, test results including laboratory, imaging, pathology, and other examinations, as well as surgical records.

Director Young-Hak Kim (Professor of Cardiology) for Digital Information Innovation Headquarter of Asan Medical Center said “Patients should be empowered as the owners of their own medical data and be able to actively utilize this information to promote health and prevent disease. Through the Health Information Expressway, medical professionals will also be able to review patients’ treatment records from other hospitals and provide care tailored to each patient’s condition, which is expected to further enhance the quality of healthcare.”
