Professor Bu-Kyu Lee of the Department of Dentistry (Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery) at Asan Medical Center was recently elected as the ninth president of the Korean Academy of Dental Sciences at the academy’s ninth General Assembly. His three year term began in May 2026.
The Korean Academy of Dental Sciences serves as the leading academic umbrella organization in Korean dentistry, representing 40 specialty societies across all major fields of dental medicine, including oral and maxillofacial surgery, conservative dentistry, prosthodontics, and orthodontics. As an incorporated association, it plays a central role in advancing dental science, providing policy recommendations, coordinating specialty societies, and overseeing academic conferences, research, and education.
Professor Bu-Kyu Lee is a leading specialist in jaw deformity reconstruction, complex orthognathic surgery, and the treatment of severe temporomandibular joint disorders, and has played a pivotal role in advancing the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery both in Korea and internationally. His research interests include artificial temporomandibular joints, umbilical cord tissue derived mesenchymal stem cells for the treatment of severe temporomandibular joint arthritis, and 3D bioprinting, reflecting his active contributions to both clinical practice and translational research.
Professor Bu-Kyu Lee previously served as president of the Korean Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and the Korean Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine Society. He currently chairs the Therapeutic Clinical Committee of the Advanced Regenerative Medicine Foundation under the Ministry of Health and Welfare and serves as a member of the Regulatory Reform Committee and a reviewer of regenerative medicine institutions, contributing to the advancement of policies and regulatory frameworks in the field of advanced regenerative medicine.
