Hybrid Online and In Person Format Expands International Exchange and Shares Advanced Medical Techniques with Indonesian Physicians

Asan Medical Center, which has led the advancement of endoscopy by providing specialized endoscopic ultrasound training to medical professionals from 41 countries, including the United States, India and Brazil, organized an event to share its expertise and clinical experience in advanced endoscopic procedures with Indonesian physicians.

The international symposium, jointly hosted by the Digestive Endoscopy Center at Asan Medical Center and the Indonesian Society of Gastroenterology (ISG), was held from August 12 to 13 at the Auditorium of the East Building at Asan Medical Center.

The symposium was held in a hybrid format, combining in person and online sessions via a video conferencing platform, broadening opportunities for international exchange. More than 20 Indonesian physicians visited Asan Medical Center in person to participate in lectures and discussions, while physicians in Indonesia also joined online to learn about Asan Medical Center’s advanced endoscopic procedures.

The first day began with welcoming remarks from Director Jeong-Sik Byeon of the Digestive Endoscopy Center at Asan Medical Center, and Ari Fahrial Syam, President of the Indonesian Society of Gastroenterology (ISG). Professor Min Kyu Kim of the Division of Gastroenterology at Asan Medical Center introduced the facilities and latest research achievements of the Digestive Endoscopy Center at Asan Medical Center. Professor Soyoung Byun of the Division of Gastroenterology at Asan Medical Center, explained Asan Medical Center’s endoscopic ultrasound training system, designed to enhance the quality and safety of endoscopic procedures.

The symposium was then divided into three sessions. In the first session, held in the morning, Professor Do Hoon Kim of the Division of Gastroenterology at Asan Medical Center, introduced the latest endoscopic techniques and clinical experience in peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM). In the second session, Indonesian physicians shared the current state of endoscopy in Indonesia, followed by in depth discussions on ways to bridge gaps in healthcare and strengthen the expertise of local medical professionals, as well as future directions for the field. The third session, held in the afternoon, featured a lecture by Professor Tae Jun Song of the Division of Gastroenterology at Asan Medical Center, on interventional endoscopic ultrasound and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). Professor Sung Wook Hwang of the Division of Gastroenterology at Asan Medical Center, then shared the latest insights and extensive clinical experience in intestinal ultrasound.

On the second day, the program included the AMC Fam Tour and an observation session at the Digestive Endoscopy Center at Asan Medical Center. The Indonesian physicians observed the full procedure workflow for ▲upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, ▲lower gastrointestinal endoscopy, and ▲pancreatobiliary endoscopy, including endoscopic ultrasound and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), gaining valuable insights into Asan Medical Center’s extensive expertise in advanced endoscopic procedures.

Meanwhile, the Digestive Endoscopy Center at Asan Medical Center received the “Center of Excellence” accreditation from the World Endoscopy Organization (WEO) in 2025. The prestigious accreditation has been awarded to only 20 institutions worldwide, with Asan Medical Center being the only recipient in Korea.
