Ranks No. 1 in Korea in Six Specialties, Including Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery, the Most Among Korean Hospitals

Asan Medical Center, under the Asan Foundation (Chairman Chung Mong-Joon), ranked among the world’s top 10 hospitals in six of the 13 clinical specialties evaluated in Newsweek’s “World’s Best Specialized Hospitals 2027” rankings. This was the highest number of specialties ranked in the global top 10 among Korean hospitals.

Asan Medical Center ranked No. 2 in endocrinology, No. 5 in gastroenterology and urology, No. 6 in oncology, and No. 9 in neurology and nephrology. Asan Medical Center was the only Korean hospital to rank in the global top 10 in six specialties, placing it among a select group of hospitals worldwide to achieve this distinction.

Asan Medical Center also ranked No. 1 in Korea in six specialties: endocrinology, gastroenterology, neurology, nephrology, cardiology, and cardiac surgery, the highest number among Korean hospitals.

Newsweek conducted the “World’s Best Specialized Hospitals 2027” evaluation in partnership with global research firm Statista and announced the final results for 13 clinical specialties on its website on September 17.

The evaluation was based on three criteria: an online survey of healthcare professionals worldwide (83.5%), international accreditation of medical institutions (10%), and the implementation of Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) (6.5%).

Asan Medical Center’s Department of Endocrinology has ranked among the world’s top five for seven consecutive years since Newsweek began its specialized hospital rankings. This year, it ranked No. 2 in the world, marking the highest ranking ever achieved by a Korean hospital in any specialty evaluated by Newsweek.

Gastroenterology, oncology, and neurology have also remained among the world’s top 10 for the past seven years. Nephrology, which was evaluated for the first time this year, ranked No. 9 in the world. Asan Medical Center also received strong rankings in other specialties, including orthopedics at No. 11, cardiology at No. 13, pulmonology at No. 14, and cardiac surgery at No. 23.

As in previous years, eight specialties at Asan Medical Center moved up in the rankings this year. Neurosurgery rose 27 places, obstetrics and gynecology 11 places, cardiac surgery seven places, pulmonology six places, cardiology four places, endocrinology and pediatrics two places, and urology one place.

Asan Medical Center has established itself as a global hospital sought out by patients from Korea and around the world, offering hope to those seeking advanced treatment for severe and complex diseases. More than 20,000 international patients from countries including the United States, the United Arab Emirates, and Mongolia visit Asan Medical Center each year.

In addition to international patients, medical professionals from around the world continue to visit Asan Medical Center to learn from its expertise in treating severe and complex diseases. Over the past 10 years, more than 3,500 medical professionals from approximately 90 countries have visited Asan Medical Center for training.

After completing their training, many have recommended Asan Medical Center to patients in their home countries with severe diseases that are difficult to treat locally, further strengthening international trust in Asan Medical Center.

Meanwhile, Asan Medical Center is taking a leading role in establishing a value based healthcare system that considers not only disease treatment but also patients’ quality of life. Patient reported outcomes, including Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs), are regularly assessed to identify the difficulties and discomfort experienced by patients, with the findings immediately incorporated into clinical care.

Asan Medical Center also plans to further expand patient centered, value based healthcare by integrating PROMs, patient experience, and clinical quality indicators under a dedicated integrated organization.
