A 23-year-old Filipino man, once standing at death’s door due to a rare and intractable disease, was miraculously given a new lease on life through South Korea’s advanced living donor liver transplantation. Despite having undergone three abdominal surgeries due to a past gunshot injury, his mother made the courageous decision to donate a portion of her liver to save her son. After an intense 11-hour operation, the family was finally able to smile again.

Asan Medical Center Medical Volunteers in Kyrgyzstan

From June 16 to 18, Asan Medical Center conducted a medical volunteer program at the DOC University Hospital, affiliated with Salymbekov Medical University in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan. This marks the 56th overseas medical mission since expanding volunteer activities abroad in 2009, and the third visit to Kyrgyzstan since the first trip in 2023. Kyrgyzstan currently lacks private hospitals that provide tertiary-level care, and its national general hospitals are hindered by outdated facilities and medical equipment, making it difficult for patients to receive appropriate treatment.

While working as an anesthesiologist for three years at a university hospital in Thailand with over 2,000 beds, I had the opportunity to attend a medical conference in Seoul, and that was when I found out about the International Visiting Scholars Program at Asan Medical Center. I wanted to learn the know-how of a world-renowned institution, so I applied, and since September 2024, I have been training in the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine at Asan Medical Center, focusing on orthopedic surgery anesthesia and acute pain management.
